Pretty Please have More Empathy (Please)

When a parent posts their toddler or baby anywhere on the internet, it is safe for them to assume at this point that at least 5 people will say; “hahaha… push it”. Now don’t get me wrong, I find myself giggling at these comments often because I too am not a huge fan of children, but sometimes it can get a little old and repetitive. Unlike videos of kids falling because THAT is funny.

Now, maybe the world could use a little empathy when it comes to situations like that, but they are pretty harmless. No no, the problem lies elsewhere. I fear that we have become far too cold hearted in situations where we need empathy most. For example, by now news of the LA fires has calmed down compared to where it was before, but oh my goodness I was going to lose my tiny little mind when it came to some of the comments going around. Okay, I say compost the rich as much as the next person, but using the dislike of someone’s class to be like yeah I’m glad their literal home burned down IS INSANE. How would you feel reading some of those comments if your house just caught on fire and nothing survived? Not great, huh? Yes they have enough money to have a new home built, and yes they are very lucky to have that privilege, but they are people. All of these movie stars and celebrities losing their homes are humans, humans who have personal belongings and mementos that could mean the world to them. Yes they are rich, but they have emotions! It’s also important to remember that LA is not all extremely rich people! There are so many working class people and even homeless people who have also been suffering as a result of this situation. Fire doesn’t know how much your house is worth, and frankly, it doesn’t care. It’s also impossible for this to be a full conversation without bringing up climate change. If this doesn’t tell you that it’s going to affect us all eventually, I don’t know how else to get that into your skull.

This is only the tip of the iceberg, and I am continuing to keep this conversation on the tip of the iceberg because I fear if I continue that this will turn into the Magna Carta, and none of us have time for that in this economy. Just please, assess situations before you comment on them and have some room in your heart for kindness, even though it’s difficult for all of us in these trying times. A little empathy goes a long way.

At the end of the day… PLEASE HAVE MORE EMPATHY WHEN IT’S IMPORTANT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE WITH A CHERRY ON TOP BECAUSE WE ARE DOOMED PLEASE.
