Dear Campus Community,
We here at SU are so excited to announce the beginning of a new project on campus! As the Degenstein Campus Center renovations are wrapping up, we are setting our sights on new endeavors! SU has always prided itself in our ability to change and keep up with the evolving world and our students’ needs. We have consistently adjusted and pivoted to best support our students, and this new construction is the next step in this evolution.
We are opening up our own Susquehanna AI Data Center! Starting October 16th, 2027, we will be tearing down the solar panels to build this massive center, along with digging a canal from the Susquehanna River to the field. This canal will simplify the process of using water to cool down the data center. We don’t want any fire safety issues! We will also begin petitioning the county into building a dam along the river so the water flows at a more consistent rate. We know there have been issues with water on campus in the past, and we want to get ahead of any problems.
We understand that the removal of the solar panel field will be a controversial subject. We are open to comments and suggestions from the student body and the Selinsgrove community at large. To share these comments and any concerns, SGA will be holding a meeting in Isaac’s Auditorium to discuss these changes. All concerned or unconcerned parties are welcome to attend.
Now, we know that the solar panel field sheep have raised morale year after year, and they will continue to do so! Without grass to mow around the solar panels, we are now inviting the sheep to man our data center! Each AI generated response will be local and farm-grown, right here on campus! While they work the machines, we will also be using AI generated crochet patterns to weave their wool into silly shapes and school merch! Part of the Art Department’s studios will be co-opted for this endeavor for continued sustainability.
Because of these incredible improvements to campus life, we will be updating a few of our policies and expanding programs, such as adding majors and minors (AI Data Farming, Fiber Arts, Zoology, etc.), as well as a higher annual tuition raise than usually anticipated. We expect around a 40-50% increase. A better estimation will come closer to the 2026-2027 school year.
In light of hosting AI on our campus, we will also be updating our AI policy. We still disapprove of using ChatGPT, Claud, Grok, and other national and international generative AI websites, but after the data center is completed (circa 2047), students will be free to use BennyHawk, SU’s own personal generative AI service.
All the generated responses that BennyHawk will give are going to be locally farmed from our very own students! Essays, discussion posts, emails, even the work from our incredibly talented arts students! We will be funneling it all through our new data center, harvesting this data and creating a generative AI that is a perfect SU student! BennyHawk will be the perfect tutor, friend, RA, and TA, one of our best new supports for our beloved students.
We’re so excited to continue working on this and bringing updates to you as we go!
Yours.
