A Series of Condemnations
By: Sophia Congdon
To the greater Susquehanna University community at large,
Now that we are all back from spring break, we presume most of the Ws at this PWI have contentedly forgotten about the hate crime that occurred on our campus not too long ago. We here at The Squirrel thought it was the perfect time to remind you that racism, and specifically anti-black rhetoric, is alive and well in our community.
We wouldn’t say that this has recently come to light, as any black student on this campus can attest that the racism never really stops. However, we thought this was as good a time as any to remind everyone that being anti-racist is more than just a philosophy; it’s a set of choices that we white people must continue to make every day.
We also thought we would offer a non-exhaustive list of other things The Squirrel condemns:
Racism, obviously
Homophobia and transphobia
Sexism and misogyny
Ableism
Hitting students with cars
The incredibly dry air in all campus housing
Slightly sticky bathtubs in hotels
When the broccoli in Deg is basically mush
When you’re trying to poop in a public bathroom and the other person won’t leave so now you’re just in a stalemate, waiting
When you’re trying to unlock your door and you can’t get the key in the lock
When the zipper on your jacket breaks thus trapping you in a cage of your own design
When your professor sends an email canceling class approximately 20 seconds before it was supposed to start as if they couldn’t possibly have sent that email five fucking minutes earlier
And lastly, whatever the fuck was going on in that SU Republicans group chat that everyone and their mother saw
Honorable mentions go to adult women who think Ryan Gosling is the sexiest man alive as well as any and all WASPy families with golden retrievers.
Thank you for your time.
