From the Files of My iPod Touch
Skipping through the graveyard that is Tumblr circa 2013, you’d be surprised by the amount of fandoms you find that have risen from the dead. Looking past the monster that was SuperWhoLock and the great Twilight Renaissance, you’ll find other fandoms that had their time to shine, eventually fizzled out, and are now essentially making comebacks of the century. With the sheer amount of content coming back, let’s take a walk down memory lane (for some of us) and revisit what made some of these fandoms so special.
Gravity Falls
Gravity Falls was simply a “you had to be there” moment when it was airing on tv. I mean, there is literally no better way to prepare for the apocalypse than to watch this wack ass show. Seeing all of the fan theories about the website that go along with the Book of Bill takes me back to when people were theorizing about who the author of the journals was, and it makes me happy to know that even though lots of us have grown up, we really haven’t changed that much. On the flipside, some of y’all are actually fucking freaks. Do you want to save the town? The only thing I really wasn’t expecting is that this revival truly started with people drawing toxic ship art for Bill and Ford. And you know what? I respect the hell out of that.
2000s Emo Music
As someone who self identified as emo in middle school, seeing all the bands I grew up loving and that era of the internet being romanticized, makes me feel like I should be in a retirement home. Ok sure the music was good, but there was like a 95% chance that you got groomed at some point. I also vividly remember being bullied for the very things you are idolizing so besties, you better check yourself here. I’m staring at my old band shirts and chokers from HotTopic in both horror and nostalgia, and you want emo music to make a comeback? When I mention the holy trinity what’s your reaction? Do you even know what I’m talking about? I didn’t think so.
Percy Jackson
Percy Jackson was the shit when I was in middle school and to think it got nerfed by those god awful movies is a travesty. I love Lady Gaga as much as the next person, but we all have to draw the line somewhere. I constantly thank the gods every day that this show exists because the fandom is steadily now healing thanks to its brilliance. It truly feels like it’s following the vision of the books and 12-year-old me is having the time of her life. Seeing fans new and old creating different theories about what will happen in the show makes me incredibly happy and I will admit, I’m also curious to see how everything plays out. It was actually really funny seeing people who didn’t read the books watch the first season, and not know literally anything that was going on. Just give me Grover in a wedding dress and everything will be ok.
Even though my entire body cracks when I move around and I could be considered an “elder” for pretty much all of these fandoms, I am really happy that these are all making the comebacks they deserve. It warms my heart to know that the newer generation will get to love the different media that I did when I was younger. Oh and by the way, I really like your shoelaces.
